Philosophy (221 Books)

Philosophy as a category is the study of general and fundamental problems, such as those connected with reality, existence, knowledge, values, reason, mind, and language. Philosophy is distinguished from other ways of addressing such problems by its critical, generally systematic approach and its reliance on rational argument. The word "philosophy" comes from the Greek philosophia, which literally means "love of wisdom".

Abstracta and Possibilia: Modal Foundations of Mathematical Platonism

By: Hasen Khudairi

This paper aims to provide modal foundations for mathematical platonism. I examine Hale and Wright's (2009) objections to the merits and need, in the defense of mathematical platonism and its epistemology, of the thesis of Necessitism. In response to Hale and Wright's objections to the role of epistemic and metaphysical modalities in providing justification for both the truth of abstraction principles and the success of mathematical predicate reference, I examine the Nec...

Multi-Dimensional Truthmaker Semantics

By: Hasen Khudairi

This paper endeavors to establish foundations for the interaction between hyperintensional semantics and multi-dimensional indexing. I examine the significance of the semantics, by developing three, novel interpretations of the framework. The first interpretation provides a characterization of the distinction between fundamental and derivative truths. The interaction between the hyperintensional truthmaker semantics and modal ontology is further examined. The second inte...

Emotional Phenomenology, Desire, and Belief

By: Hasen Khudairi

This essay concerns the interaction between the emotions and sensory and cognitive phenomenal consciousness. In Section \textbf{2}, I argue that emotional phenomenology can be identified with the positively and negatively valenced information comprising a subject's memory stores, and that the valences modulate the subject's sensory and cognitive phenomenal awareness. I argue that a sufficient condition on the instantiation of emotional phenomenal properties is the subjec...

Absolute Decidability and Mathematical Modality

By: Hasen Khudairi

This paper aims to contribute to the analysis of the nature of mathematical modality, and to the applications of the latter to unrestricted quantification and absolute decidability. Rather than countenancing the interpretational type of mathematical modality as a primitive, I argue that the interpretational type of mathematical modality is a species of epistemic modality. I argue, then, that the framework of multi-dimensional intensional semantics ought to be applied to ...

An Epistemicist Solution to the Alethic Paradoxes

By: Hasen Khudairi

This paper targets a series of potential issues for the discussion of, and modal resolution to, the alethic paradoxes advanced by Scharp (2013). I aim, then, to provide a novel, epistemicist treatment of the alethic paradoxes. In response to Curry's paradox, the epistemicist solution that I advance enables the retention of both classical logic and the traditional rules for the alethic predicate: truth-elimination and truth-introduction. By availing of epistemic modal log...

Intention, Modality, and Decision Theory

By: Hasen Khudairi

This paper argues that the types of intention can be modeled as modal operators. I delineate the intensional-semantic profiles of the types of intention, and provide a precise account of how the types of intention are unified in virtue of both their operations in a single, encompassing, epistemic modal space, and their role in practical reasoning. I endeavor to provide reasons adducing against the proposal that the types of intention are reducible to the mental states of...

Two Essays by Kleist : On the Marionette Theatre and On the Assemb...

By: Andrew Thomas Jansen, Translator; Heinrich von Kleist

In these two essays, the German playwright Heinrich von Kleist explores how humanity's mental world fits into its physical one. On the Marionette Theatre weighs the role mental awareness plays in physical actions. On the Assembly of Thoughts while Talking searches for the extent that physical stimuli determine thoughts and ideas.

We see that in matter, in the organic world, as reflection becomes darker and weaker, grace always emerges brighter and stronger. —But, like how the intersection of two lines at the same side of a point, after a passage through the infinite, suddenly appears again at the other side, or like how the image in a concave mirror stretches endlessly away until it suddenly greets us again: so it stands, when knowledge has gone through infinity, it comes to grace again; so that ...

Light of Consciousness : : Revelation of divine essence

By: Jayita Bhattacharjee

This book describes the revealing of our inner light, how it reveals itself as we walk through the times, the moments, the lessons, the blessings that come along our way. They add such a myriad of colors to our path, some in softness, some others in stronger shades of vibrancy. Yet they do add wholeness to our lives, in which we find our way back to the inner sanctuary and eventually glimpse the light that is burning steadily inside.

Break open the heart in the light of universal compassion and let the waters flow. Let them mingle with the vastness of the ocean laden with mercy for all that is in a longing for it. Compassion when mingles with life becomes heavenly graceful, divinely blissful. We just have to behold the beauty of that showering, the blessings of that merciful rain. Fall in love with the ultimate divine, and existence will open its doors for you, unfolding all its mysteries. That...

Sacred Sanctuary :: A flow of spiritual ecstasy

By: Jayita Bhattacharjee

Sacred sanctuary brings us closer to ourselves. Relentlessly, we are running to seek the gem of gems, the treasure of treasures, but the treasure lies so very much inside the sanctuary. Our soul is the very shrine, the shrine that we search elsewhere. In the meditative silence, do we glimpse that truth, do we taste that joy, flowing from the chalice of divine.

Let the constellation of our feelings and thoughts that surface with wonder and questions from the depths of our souls guide us to a path that awakens our ancient beliefs. Let the ears of our soul listen compassionately and with a sense of creation so as to shape and mold our beliefs into the ones which can reveal purity hued with every emotion, every aspect of our finer feelings. It can bring about a new meaning, a new vision, a new enlightened ground where all ca...

Some time ago I heard some group sing, “Love is the answer; Now, what was the question?” What a Mahavaakya (Great pithy statement)! Perhaps it is at the level of the Great Upanishadic Mahavaakyas like Thath Thwam Asi (You are That). "I regard consciousness as fundamental. I regard matter as derivative from consciousness." - Max Planck "Science cannot solve the ultimate mystery of nature. And that is because, in the last analysis, we ourselves are part of nature a...

By: Ms. Jayita Bhattacharjee

This book intends to discover the deeper philosophies of life from the nurturing of ones' own soul, to understand the authentic journey of the heart, how it lives richly and fully, how deep is the joy when lived from the heart, how rich is the wisdom of soul. It takes us to a broader understanding of what is needed to find the light of happiness as we go beyond what we see to what we feel at the solitary retreats of our hearts.

Walk with the grace of compassion, as its music is everlasting, echoing through the passages of time. Be the dancing soul of this universe.

Messenger of Bliss: How Maharishi Mahesh Yogi Set Off to Heal the ...

By: Martin Zucker

A brief personal account, as related by one of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's closest associates, of the very early days of the Transcendental Meditation movement.

Maharishi’s real destination on leaving India was the United States. An American had heard one of his talks and urged him to go to America, that his teaching would really catch on there. Maharishi felt also that if he could popularize meditation in the most progressive and creative country on earth, it would surely accelerate expansion of the practice elsewhere in the world. But getting to America — or anywhere, for that matter — was solely determined by the degree of s...

Bhagvad-Gita Treatise of Self-Help

By: BS Murthy

'Bhagavad-Gita is the most beautiful, perhaps the only true philosophical song existing in any known tongue' – so opined William von Humboldt, who wrote seven-hundred verses in its praise. In this modern rendition, the beauty of the Sanskrit slokas is reflected in the rhythmic flow of the English verse of poetic proportions even as the attendant philosophy of the song that is Bhagvad-Gita is captured in contemporary idiom for easy comprehension. It is a matter of con...

All about Life-Chapter 2 This character defining chapter of the Gita comprising 72 slokas, known assaankhya yoga, Realization through Knowledge, is regarded by many, as the peerless part of the great epic. Arjuna’s dilemma, meanwhile, turns into grief, as the horrific prospect of slaying Bhishma, his revered granduncle, and Drona, his venerated guru, sinks into his consciousness. Bogged down by sentiment, Arjuna appeals to Lord Krishna for guidance. The Lord’s response ...
